Do you notice a dangerous and/or urgent situation that requires an immediate halt to train traffic? Contact our services directly at the national emergency number 1711 (free of charges) so we can stop train traffic or intervene as soon as possible.
Most accidents at level crossings are the result of dangerous behaviour. Even though level crossings are clearly marked with barriers and the St. Andrew’s Cross, many people ignore these signals. This often leads to unsafe situations, compromising the safety of both road users and rail passengers.
With a rail network that still contains 1621 level crossings, it is important to make their use as safe as possible. This is why we have created the emergency number 1711 (free of charges).
What is 1711?
This is the national emergency number (free of charges) for level crossing emergencies. It puts you in direct contact with our traffic control and they can immediately stop train traffic if necessary. For example: when your car breaks down at a level crossing, when a tree threatens to fall or has fallen on the rail infrastructure, ... and more. This number ensures that you can quickly call for help when you find yourself in an emergency. So be sure to save this number!
Sticker at all level crossings
On every public level crossing pole along the road you will find a sticker with the emergency number on it. So don't hesitate to call the number in case of an accident or dangerous situation at a level crossing! No time to lose, dial 1711 immediately! Note: any misuse is punishable.
Remember these reflexes in case of an emergency on the tracks!
- First, get yourself in safety and leave the tracks
- Call 1711, which will put you in direct contact with our traffic control centre
- Give them the correct information which you can find on the ‘identification sticker’ on the level crossing post. The sticker contains useful information such as the number of the railway line and level crossing, the street name and city.
Spread the word!
Tell your loved ones about 1711, because that's how you can save lives! Too many accidents still happen at level crossings every year and a large proportion of them can be avoided if help is called in time. Therefore, tell those around you about the importance of this emergency number (free of charges).
